Jeffrey was born in Chicago Illinois but grew up mostly in Connecticut. He studied at Kenyon College graduating with a double major of Studio Art and Economics. He currently lives and works in Pasadena. Jeffrey has been represented by Heart since 2016.
Jeffrey is an illustrator deeply immersed in his practice. He deftly straddles being aware of commercial necessities, the requirements and expectations of clients, whilst still questioning and evolving his work throughout the process of every commission. He creates artwork with coloured pencils, paint and any other media that suits his needs. An assemblage of images are brought together into a composition on the computer and endlessly tinkered with before often realising that the first version was the best.
Jeffrey works prolifically in sketchbooks, having several on the go at one time, and one which is involved in a visual exchange with his friend the illustrator Rob Dunlavey. A regular activity is to create observational drawings with his feet in the foreground of each viewpoint. Jeffrey satirically refers to this series as ‘selfies’. He also uses his sketchbooks to explore visual motifs, in this amassing a number of drawings of heads. These are rough and primitive drawings without conceptual ideas. They are not supposed to be illustrative but have nevertheless worked their way into a few recent commercial commissions.
Jeffrey works regularly with editorial clients such as The New Yorker, The New York Times, Johns Hopkins, The Los Angeles Times and Time Magazine. In addition to editorial assignments, he has produced artwork for album sleeves, theatre posters, annual reports, book covers and advertising campaigns. He has recently illustrated the prospectus for Parsons The New School for Design.
