Marc Boutavant was born in Dijon, France. He now lives in Paris, working from both a home studio and a group studio near Bastille. Marc’s representation with Heart started in 2000.
Marc’s work springs from a wry observation of life and the interaction of his friends and children. Quirks of personality, mannerisms and reactions to situations are transposed onto his characters. These are creatures with a full gamut of emotions.
Marc is perhaps best known for his creation Mouk, a character which has featured in a series of books including the best selling ‘Mouk’s World Tour’. Mouk’s adventures have been made into an animated TV series as well as a range of children’s products. Chronicle Books have also commissioned Marc to produce games and stationery including an advent calendar an ‘All Aboard’ train puzzle and new ‘Sky High’ puzzle. Chronicle also publish ‘Mouk’ in the US and have commissioned other illustrated books from Marc including ‘For Just One Day’ and the ‘Barkus’ series. In addition to Chronicle, Marc also creates toys and puzzles for the well know toy maker, Djeco. These include wooden pull along toys, stacking bricks and jigsaws. Marc works regularly for Walker Books and Bloomsbury in the UK, illustrating ‘Never Tickle a Tiger’ and the subsequent series of books.
Marc’s success as a children’s book illustrator and author has much to do with his broad appeal with adults and children alike. This has led to a varied commercial career, creating advertising campaigns for Ford, Vodafone, Grand Optical and Banette as well as packaging for Marks & Spencers, album artwork for SONY and awareness campaigns for the children’s charity NSPCC.
